Gentle Quiet While the Forest Sleeps 36” x 48” acrylic $3400

Hiking down into a quiet river bed early in the morning before the sun fully penatetrates the dark shadows is a treat. I feel like I must tread lightly so as not to disturb the forest and creek fairie folk.

Calm green and earth tones gives this painting a calming feel. Breath deeply.

Meanwhile < The World Carries On 36” x 60” acrylic $4,200

A quiet but unsettling stillness settled over Halliburton and much of Canada and even the United States last summer as forest fires raged and smoke traveled thousands of kilometers away from its source. The rosy hues of the skies layered the forest and lakes and bid us beware. I came upon this small lake while driving the area and it’s beauty stood in stark contrast to its warning.

Available at Earls Court , Hamilton

Forest Fever acrylic 36” x 24” $ 1300.

Forest fires are meant to cleanse the land , a means of renewal much needed for a healthy ecosystem, but last summer found that natural system out of whack as forests across the country experienced record braking wild fires. Their fierce beauty is a double edged sword meant as a warning to us all.

With Baited Breath I’ll Watch You Grow” 36” x 48” acrylic $3400

This idyllic, canoe view is from Benoir Lake in Haliburton on the edge of Algonquin Park. I love to paddle in early morning when the air and water is still and the far hills of the Haliburton Highlands surround you on all sides. This tenacious little spruce has me intrigued. It is growing out of an old white pine stump in the middle of a very marshy area. I was very happy to see it has survived another winter.

Rifle Range Stone Wall, Bruce Trail 48”x 36” acrylic $3,200 SOLD

This most pleasant and easily accessable section of the Bruce Trail suns thru downtown Hamilton. It is called the Rail Trail as it once provided a route thru the city .The escarpment towers over you on one side but the other is a section of solid stone, a break and a hand built section which seems so odd. History reveals this a part of a wall erected to protect the trains that once ran thru there from the rifle range that once lay below this section as a training place for World War II. Now a small lookout over the forest below that is particularily beautiful in the fall.

Algonquin Glow 15” x 30”

Any little slice of Algonquin Park looks good to me, especially touched by the brillant colours of an evening sunset. I ventured out one evening as is my habit. I hiked Killarneys famous ‘“Crack “ Trail this last spring. It is not an easy trail as it puts you on all fours at times but the view from the top is exhilarating. This lone tenacious pine is not suprisingly rather thin but you can’t help but be impressed it can survive at all. In the far distance you will see OSA lake with a small island in it. It stands for Ontario Society of Artists which I am a member of. They were responsible, along with J.H.McDonld and other Group of Seven members for saving this overlogged area for the future. If you are a hiker this is a must for your bucket list.

It is especially evident in cottage country where the glaciers have scraped and smoothed it over the ages. This piece celebrates the hardy existence of the White Pine, that manages to find a foothold in the cracks and fissures of the granite of Canada’s ancient bones. This piece is based on Big Bald Lake in the Kawartha region but could be found in many areas.

Autumn Escarpment Dream, Beamer Conservation Area” acrylic $ 3000. SOLD

Most of the Bruce Trail runs along the top of the escarpment or down into the valleys between but at Beamer Conservation Area an old quarry allows a peak thru the limestone walls where stone was dropped thru to a railline below. I love how it frames the sky and the town of Grimsby below. Of course fall offers the added excitement of multi toned sumac complimenting the hardy cedars framing the opening.

Fall allows a full pallete of colour against the neutral grays. A swan song befre winter sets in.

I’ve hiked Rattlesnake Point many times as a teenager, a young Brownie leader and now as a landscape artist I enjoy revisting its wondeful rock formations, wide vistas and ancient trees. Some of the cedars that cling to the cliff edge are said to be 800 years old. If only they could tell their storys.
